Teacher Spotlight | Meet Katie-Jane!: Learn this Vail Valley Native’s Path to Becoming a Lifetime Dancer

You may see Katie-Jane in the studio, gracing the stage of local musicals or at the barre of our local Pure Barre in Riverwalk, but you will notice she is always dancing. Dance has been a part of our teacher Katie-Jane’s life for as long as she can remember. She started her training at the tender age of three, and before she knew it, dance was all she was doing.

As a Vail Valley native, Katie-Jane’s dance journey may seem familiar, but it has been punctuated with some defining moments. Katie trained at Vail Valley Academy of Dance for over a decade before joining the Battle Mountain High School Dance Team and ultimately becoming their captain! As captain of the dance team, she led her girls to a national title in New York City.  After graduating she ventured to Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles and the University of Colorado Boulder, studying dance at both institutions. While dancing around the country, she was exposed to incredible dancers that showed her that if you can commit, the sky is the limit. “There is nothing more motivating than being challenged by those that are better than you,” said Katie-Jane.

Now as a teacher, Katie-Jane is revisiting the lessons she is learned and working to instill them in her students. A major lesson and common theme for Katie-Jane has been respect. “Respect for not only your fellow peers but respect for the teacher and respect for your own body and mind.” She also has learned that you are never truly done being a student, learning is a lifetime pursuit.

Through her work as a Pilates teacher, barre instructor, advocate for the environment and as a dance teacher, Katie-Jane’s passion for helping others is apparent, and we are so lucky to have her on staff with us!

More About Katie-Jane

What is your favorite genre of dance? Why?

My favorite genres of dance are Contemporary and Hip-Hop. I love the technique behind both, but more importantly, the expressiveness that comes with the style/movement. The movement is a story all within itself and allows the artist to become fully engulfed in the moment.

What’s your favorite thing about teaching at 8100?

My favorite thing about teaching at 8100 is the dynamics of all the students. The student body is powerful and for everyone to be able to come together and move is beautiful! I love the community that’s at the studio – I even as a teacher, feel challenged by the students to be better and for that, I am forever grateful!

List something fun or exciting about yourself that is not dance related?

I love Musical Theater. I also love to be active – running, stand up paddle boarding, snowboarding, skiing, hiking and spending quality time with friends and family. I am the youngest of four children and am the only girl! I love hockey and even used to play when I was younger.
